HIPAA Compliance

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is U.S. law that safeguards medical information by defining privacy and security rules for secure access, transfer and processing of patient health information.

For IT professionals HIPAA compliance most often refers to HIPAA Title II that details standards for healthcare electronic data interchange, patient privacy protections and patient data security. Title II also details powers for the Department of Health and Human Services to conduct investigations and fine compliance violations.
